Keeping your journal for the long term
Understand the difference between sync and backup, and why you should keep your recovery code separately.
Writing should be easy. A little preparation helps ensure you can still open those entries later.
Sync and file backups
Sync lets you continue writing encrypted records across devices. File backup exports your records to a separate file for safekeeping. Even if you sync, back up important entries separately.
Clearing your browser’s site data affects records stored on the current device. Check your backup before changing devices or resetting your browser.
Keep your recovery code safe
Email sign-in verifies account access, but does not decrypt your vault. You need your recovery code to recover the vault on another device.
Do not send your recovery code to anyone. Store it somewhere safe that you can access even if you lose your device. Avoid keeping its only copy on the same device as your journal.
Before you begin
Read the app’s backup and recovery instructions, and check your exported file and recovery code. Do not enter recovery codes or personal records on this website or in support messages.
